ADOPTION

First steps

When you adopt a pet from Better Together Animal Alliance, you’re giving an animal another chance while also supporting programs that help pets and people in need across our community.

To get started, view the animals available for adoption online or call the animal care center to make an appointment. Our friendly staff will work with you to find the right dog or cat for your home, taking into consideration the medical and/or behavioral needs of the animal.

After adoption, BTAA will continue to support you and your pet at home. Ourย pet resource libraryย is full of information that can make your pet’s transition from the shelter to your home as stress-free as possible โ€” including tips and details about BTAA programs and services.

Please note: To adopt from BTAA, you must be present and at least 18 years of age or older. Animals listed on Home To Homeยฎ are not at our animal care center โ€” to contact their owner, click the pet’s picture and select “Contact Owner”.

What's included in your adoption

Your adoption fee covers all the essentials to set you and your new pet up for success. Adoption fees include vaccines, deworming, microchip, spay/neuter, surgery or treatment necessary for the animal’s health, a free health exam at a participating veterinary clinic, post-adoption support, and (for dogs) a low-cost obedience class provided by Pend Oreille Veterinary Service.

ย

Actual value from $300-$450.

ALSO INCLUDED

Microchip & registration

When you adopt through BTAA, your pet will be microchipped and registered to you at the time of adoption. If you ever need to verify your pet’s microchip number, give us a call or look it up through the Pet Microchip Registry.

ย

If you move, change your phone number, or rehome your pet, the microchip info will need to be updated. Call BTAA at (208) 265-7297 ext. 100 to make changes at any time it’s free for life. You can also update your info through Found Animals.

Post-Adoption Care

Additional Veterinary Examination

Within 14 days of adoption, you can take your new pet for a free veterinary examination by a participating veterinarian. While our veterinary staff makes every effort to assess and report the health of your new pet, BTAA is not a full-service veterinary hospital.

ย

Once your adoption is finalized, you’ll be responsible for all medical bills and decisions regarding your pet. However, if a new health problem (not noted at the time of adoption) develops within 14 days, you have the option to call our veterinary staff to discuss possible treatment options provided by BTAA.

ย

If you proceed on your own and agree to diagnostics, treatment, or medications recommended by your veterinarian, it will be at your own expense. BTAA will not reimburse you or your veterinarian for medical expenses incurred.

Adopt FAQs

Common questions about adopting.

What is the adoption process?

After you submit an adoption application, our team will review your information and contact you to discuss the pet you’re interested in. Once approved, you’ll have the opportunity to meet your potential new companion and complete the adoption process.

Our adoption fee helps cover essential veterinary care, which may include spay/neuter surgery, age-appropriate vaccinations, microchipping, and a health examination. Specific services may vary by animal.

Each pet has a unique personality and needs. Our team is happy to help you find a companion that matches your lifestyle, activity level, home environment, and experience with pets.

Absolutely! We encourage prospective adopters to schedule a meet-and-greet to ensure both you and your future pet are a great match before finalizing the adoption.
