Found a Loose Dog? Here’s What You Need to Know

With changes to local contracts, BTAA is no longer responsible for managing stray dogs for Bonner County, Sandpoint, and Ponderay. But we’re here to help guide you if you find a lost pet and need to connect it with its family or find safe options for rehoming.

Studies show dogs are much more likely to be reunited with their families if they remain in the area where they were found, so caring for the dog locally is highly recommended.

Steps to Take if You Find a Stray Dog

  1. Check for ID
Look for a collar with tags. If there’s no ID, visit one of our partner locations to scan for a microchip. Found a pet with a microchip? Check the ID at MyPetHealth.com.

Create Flyers, Post Online & Social Media
Hang flyers in the area where the dog was found, create a post for the dog on Petco Love Lost, and share it on your social media. This helps lost pets get seen by more community members. Need help setting up an account? Contact BTAA, and we can assist you.

Provide Care for Idaho’s Five-Day Hold Requirement
Idaho law requires a found dog to be publicly posted (online or in print) for five business days before rehoming. Caring for the dog during this period increases the chances of reuniting the dog with its family. BTAA will provide supplies such as food, bedding and/or crate, toys, and other necessities.

After the Hold Period
If you’re unable to locate the owner, contact BTAA to schedule an intake time, adopt the dog, or use Home-to-Home to rehome it for free.

If the Dog is Obviously Sick or Injured
Call BTAA at (208) 265-7297 ext. 100 or bring the dog to our animal care facility (or the closest animal shelter or vet office) for assistance.

If You’re Concerned About Stray Dog Management

Due to recent decisions by local officials, stray dog management is now under the responsibility of Bonner County, Sandpoint, and Ponderay. If you have questions or concerns about this change, reach out to your local representatives—stray dog management is a function of public safety as outlined in Idaho law. They need to hear your voice on this important issue!
