When you see a loose pet in your neighborhood or on your daily commute, it can be hard to know what to do. Do you stop and pick it up? Call animal control? Then what? Here are a few steps you can take to help reunite lost pets with their family.
● If it won’t come to you or seems possibly unfriendly, contact Bonner County Dispatch at (208) 265-5525 and provide the location and description of the animal.
● If it is friendly, check for a collar and ID tag. Calling the phone number provided is often the fastest way to find their home.
● No ID tag? Bring the animal to a local veterinarian, shelter, or another community partner with a microchip scanner.
● If it has a registered microchip, you can choose to care for the animal until its owners are contacted, or if that isn’t an option, you can bring the animal to your local shelter or BTAA. Just be sure to communicate your intent with the scanner location so that they can tell the owners where they can find their pet.
If you’d like some more tips about what to do if you find a lost pet, text STRAY to (833) LOV-BTAA to receive tips via text and links to more resources.*
